Conterno Fantino

The Conterno Fantino winery was founded in 1982 by Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino. Today we grow 27 hectares of vines and produce around 150,000 bottles per year, from four varieties Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Chardonnay.

Over the years, the two founders were joined by Alda, Fabio and Elisa Fantino as well as Noemi and Matteo, who held various functions within the company. In total, the vineyard employs around 10 people at rush hour.

Sustainable development of the environment, preservation of biodiversity, respect for the land and its heritage are the guiding principles in our vineyards that are grown organically (confirmed by CCPB certificates). In order to further reduce our environmental impact, the vineyard started using technical improvements to save energy in 2008, for example solar panels and a geothermal system. Finally, the wetlands were adapted for wastewater treatment. The main purpose of Conterno Fantino wines is to reflect one's own identity by: manually picking fruit into small boxes; preservation of aromas thanks to spontaneous fermentation without the addition of commercial yeast, careful use of wood for aging the wine and minimizing the use of sulphites.

“This seemingly complex path is the most natural for us. Our wine is a child of the earth that must grow up and mature step by step just like a family member. Our wine is one of us. "

The Barolo production zone, which was officially designated in 1966 and granted DOC (Controlled Appeal) status, has remained unchanged to this day and covers the territory of 11 different cities, including Monforte d'Alba. According to the current rules for the production of Barolo wine, which has enjoyed a controlled and guaranteed status as a name (DOCG) since 1980, it must comply with the following rules and parameters:

Variety: nebbiolo 100%

Maximum production per hectare: 8 t / ha - 54 hl / ha

Minimum legal aging: 38 months from November 1, after harvest, of which 18 in wooden barrels.

From the year 2010, the label may show:

Barolo, maximum production 8 t / ha

Barolo with the city of origin of the grapes, maximum production 8 t / ha

Barolo of Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva (MGA or Cru)

Barolo with Vigna ("vineyard"), always combined with Cru. The use of the word 'Vigna' obliges the producer to reduce the harvest by 10%, from 8 to 7.2 tonnes per hectare (from 3.2 to 2.88 tonnes per acre).
