Le Merle Blanc was originally produced around the middle of the 19th century and was then one of the most important products of Chateau Clarke. Unfortunately, Le Merle Blanc production has declined since the vineyard was dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with no room for white varieties. After acquiring Chateau Clarke in 1973, Baron Edmond wanted to restore Le Merle Blanc to its former glory and decided to pay tribute to these forgotten wines. A small part of the vineyard covering just 2 hectares was planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Gris, resuming production of this wine. Due to the small planting areas, only 6,000 bottles are produced annually.
