In 1755, Prince Richelieu met with Governor Guienne, who recommended him Chateau Lafite as the best, most sustainable wine. When the Marshal returned to Paris, King Louis XV was to say to him: "Indeed, Marshal, you look 25 years younger than before leaving for Guienne!" "I must tell Your Majesty," replied the 60-year-old Marshal, "that I have discovered the Secret of Eternal Youth: the wine from Chateau Lafite. A truly hearty, wonderful, divine nectar!" Richelieu gave the king a few bottles. Soon, at Versailles, there was talk of a wine that the king liked so much. Everyone wanted to try this excellent drink. Madame Pompadour served them at her unusual parties. Later M-me du Barry did not serve any other than the royal wine as it was then called. It was an excellent business for the then owner of the vineyard, Nicolas Alexander de Ségur, nicknamed "The Prince of Wine".

The estate is managed today by Eric de Rothschild, one of the French branch of the family (Mouton belongs to the English part of the family). The classic Médoc varieties are grown in the vineyard: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot. About 300,000 bottles leave the Château each year. The owners of Château Lafite Rothschild also include other famous vineyards: Château Duhart-Milon (Pauillac), Château Rieussec (Sauternes), Château l'Evangile (Pomerol) and the lesser-known Château Paradis Casseuil and Château Peyre-Lebade.
