Juliénas is situated at the extreme northwest end of the Beaujolais region, bordering Chénas to the south and Saint-Amour to the north-east. The appellation covers four municipalities and is located above the village of Juliénas, facing south. The clay soil produces very good wines, both young, after a few years of bottling, and those that mature longer. The vineyards producing the vines used to produce Julienas show the greatest variety of terrain of any Beaujolais grape-growing. The grapes are harvested by hand when they are fully ripe.
